If you have ever experienced a day in any rural area, you would know what the essence of “country life,” is all about. It is a life unlike anything you experience in any city. It’s a lush green landscaped environment, speckled with countless variations of domesticated animals, native birds, small colorful houses, and the ever- present mountain range. People in the country are very unique. They are unassuming, and enjoy a lifestyle that embraces the simplicity and pleasantness of life.
A day in the country usually begins with the rooster crowing, dogs barking, a simple good morning, and the embrace of the lush green acreages soaking in the fresh air. There seems to be a formula for what the day will be like, you just let the day unfold in any way it chooses to. Life in the country is pretty much the same day after day, a strict routine of waking up, eating breakfast, doing errands, eating dinner, and going to bed. I wonder why I like routines ink my life.

The rooster crowing is usually a sign that it’s time to wake up, but people innately know when to rise from sleep. Lying in bed later than six in the morning is usually for what is sometimes referred to as the “lazy people.” Everyone in the country is trained to be industrious so the label is non-existent in the country. Breakfast follows, usually a simple meal of tea, boiled bananas with some kind of a green vegetable with the optional saltfish. After breakfast, the major chores begin. The sweeping of the house and yard, going “ a groun” (the farm) for about five hours, washing clothes, cooking meals, taking care of the animals, and caring for family members continue throughout the day until it’s dinner time. After dinner is consumed, it’s then time for bed. Because there is no electricity in many homes, television watching is non-existent, and few people listen to the news on their battery-operated radio. There is no stimulating entertainment but the occasionally ”sound system” in a small grocery shop, where men may hang out to get a drink. One day roll into the other, with very little changing each day.
Unlike city life, there are few street lights and cars, no push carts, no tall buildings, no supermarkets, no hagglers on the sidewalks, no banks, no restaurants, no loud music, no one dressed in fancy clothes, nothing to disturb the peaceful quietness. The roads are not populated with people, and people go about their days in an unassuming way. No one is in any great hurry to go anywhere or do anything. There is this pleasantness of spirit in the people you meet and everything around you seems to embrace a feeling of contentment.
The unpretentious life in the country is the essence of what the human spirit should be like. Country life is simple, quiet, and unassuming.
I love a country life.
