Dear Jamaican Grandmas,

The love month of February could not be celebrated this year without giving you the recognition you so well deserve. There are few people more deserving, and who should be loved every day than you, our Jamaican grandmas.

You are the epidimy of the word sacrifice. For years, and for some a lifetime, you have sacrificed much of your life for your grandchildren, and for most of you, without a word of thanks from their parents.  When I thing about your life, I think the ultimate sacrifice you made, was taking care of your grandchildren for those of your own children who migrated to foreign lands.  Some never returned, and you were left to raise a second family you probably never planned for. What a gift to us!  Most of us didn’t recognize that gift until we were adults trying to navigate our lives. This month, all the grandchildren you have sacrificed for, want to say, “THANK YOU GRANDMA.”

We thank you for denying yourself of so much to make sure we had food, clothing, and shelter.  We thank you for unselfishly loving us, and caring for us.  We thank you for showing us daily what the words love, forgiveness, and patience means.
We remember the times you spank us and got us straight. We remember how you went without food to make sure we ate.  We remember the times you went to the market for days, trying to sell items from the garden to buy things we needed. We remember the times you attempted to sew clothes for us, and the many miles you walked to get us to school or church. You did so much, a note/letter cannot list them all. We really cannot say thank you enough for life!

We have been sustained throughout our lives, by the lessons you taught us.  You taught us to be humble and kind.  You told us to “learn something” and try to make our lives better than yours. We especially remember the talks about how to rely on our faith when life and people were not kind to us, and how to recite scripture verses in times of stress.  You are our lesson in life.

Grandmas, you have been unwavering in your responsibility to take on a task that was not meant for you.  For that and so much more, we all say thank you.

Sincerely and Always Grateful,
The Grandchildren All Over the World That You Took Care Of

Please join me in writing love notes/letters to your grandma this February.
