Literacy matters and we want everyone especially our children to be successful at everything they do. Have fun and share!
Kids from Pre-school to High School can learn to set SMART goals with adult supervision.
Sit with your child, and talk about some things he/she/they would like to do this new year.
Create a list, them select one, two, or three goals to focus on for the year. One is good for Pre-schoolers through third grade, two for fourth grade thought sixth grade, and three for grade seven through high school. You decide what’s best for your family, but try to set at least one goal. Choose a goal that is not difficult to get accomplished.
Before you make a final decision, talk about whether or not the goal is simple to do, can it be done in the time given (a week, month(s), year), can it be done within any problems, is it an important goal, and is it reasonable. When the goal(s) is/are accomplished, you should feel very good. That’s what you are shooting for. Have fun!
Helpful Reminder:
When thinking about creating SMART goals, remember to include some or all of these elements…
Specific (simple, sensible, significant)
Measurable (meaningful, motivating)
Achievable (agreed, attainable)
Relevant (reasonable, realistic, result-based) and
Time-based (time limited, time sensitive, time-bound).
Setting goals is a chance for the family to engage with each other and connect at specific times during the day, week, or month. Set up a schedule that will share “check in” times, where guidance will be given, and/or to “check in” on progress.
