How do you prepare your kids for an emergency occurrence.  Whether it be a hurricane, a fire, a flood, a landslide, an earthquake,  or the number of natural disasters that can occur at any moment in time, it is important to teach our kids how to handle what can be traumatic experiences.  It is never too early to teach your kids strategies that may help them to take care of themselves when you may not be around.

Questions to Ask:
What will you do?  How will you handle _______? Where will you go? Who will you call? How do you get out?

Some things to start doing now…
  1. Discuss what an emergency/disaster is with your child.  Let them know it’s always good to be prepared and how they should react.
  2. Make and emergency plan.
  3. Create and share contact information.  Let them know the people in your circle will be safe to be with.
  4. Discuss when to use the 911 number.
  5. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.  You must practice possible emergency situations.
  6. Tell kids to always be aware of their surroundings.
  7. Tell kids not to panic when something happens.  They need to be able to think clearly so they will be able to protect themselves and solve problems.
  8. Teach disaster vocabulary…definition, examples.
