Make the teaching/learning fun, by modeling for them when and how to use these words to guide their daily behaviors. It’s also important to teach/remind them when it is not necessary. Explain for example, when would be a good time to say “excuse me.” Would you say excuse me when trying to get through a crowd, when you reach across a dinner table for something, when you are playing ball with your friend? When is it absolutely necessary? Can you go about your daily life and not use the “good manners” terms? What situations can you think of where you would not be required to say, “excuse me.”
I encounter so many people who frequently who do not use their good manners when they are sharing a space with me. Because this can often lead to unpleasant behavior, you may want to remind your child that using these “good manners” words, can help to avoid conflicts.
