How do we help our children to become positive affirmers that will help to reduce anxiety and stress in their lives? You can begin by letting your child overhear you saying something wonderful about him/her frequently. Some examples include, “I am so proud of you.” “you are special to me.” “have a good day,” “you make me smile,” “you are good at doing that,” “can you teach me how you did that?” If you are not sure you will be able to think of something positive to say, try creating a “cheat sheet” of positive things you can say to your child, post it in a place you can find quickly, and practice using them. Watch how your child will emulate what is being said. Your family will be happier and more importantly, your child will experience feelings of empowerment, positive attitude, empathy, confidence, good character and ability, and positive self esteem.
Remember that while nothing is guaranteed, we do know that a negative attitude often guarantees failure. Using affirmations therefore will increase the odds of success so let’s strive to become positive affirmers.
